There’s nothing better than the feeling of achieving your goal. Something you have put so much time, energy, and effort into has finally paid off! So the question is, why do we let distractions get in the way of our success? Maybe it's due to lack of energy or motivation, poor planning, our overall mindset or unrealistic expectations, to name a few.
The best way to overcome these distractions and feelings is to be S.M.A.R.T. with our goals. In this blog, we've broken down each acronym and what it means to set intentional, S.M.A.R.T goals. We hope you walk away having learned something new that you can now apply to your own life - fitness related or not, this method is life-changing.
- (S)pecific - Your goal needs to be detailed. You want to be clear on what you wish to achieve.
- (M)easureable - Use numerical values (date, amounts, time etc.). Not only does this help with making your goal specific, you are now able to successfully track and measure your progress.
Example: "I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months (January 1st, 2022)." This goal is specific, has numerical values, and can be easily measured each day, week, or month to track progress.
- (A)ttainable & (R)ealistic - These two go hand in hand. To be successful, your goal should be attainable and in alignment with the direction you're headed in life. After all, you want a goal that keeps you excited and motivated so choose something that is challenging, but possible.
Pro Tip: Write down the purpose for your goal. Place it somewhere you can see it everyday. This will help keep you on track when you lose motivation or have set backs.
- (T)imely - Always set specific deadlines for the completion of your goal. Creating a target date of completion creates accountability and gives you a boost of motivation.
Here are a few additional examples of what setting S.M.A.R.T goals would look like:
“ I want to run a mile without stopping by ___DATE___"
“ I want to increase my barbell squat by 25 pounds in 6 weeks”
“ I want to do 5 unassisted chin ups by March 19st, 2022 - 5 months from today"
